Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi commonly know as Mahatma Gandhi, Bapu and Gandhiji was one of the most prominent leaders of the Indian Independence Movement. Born 2 October 1869 in a Hindu Merchant Caste Family in Gujarat. He was the youngest of all children and had three older siblings, 2 brothers, and one sister. According to his sister from the very young age, he was a free spirited child that either played or roamed around. Everybody knows that he followed truth and non-violence and the reason for that was the impression of Harishchandra on him. He believed that he should act like Harishchandra and always stand by the truth. Since he was the most educated among his siblings all of his family members believed that he would succeed his father and become a Diwan. He then went to London so he could qualify and achieve diwan-ship.

He was married to Kasturba Gandhi and had four children all sons. He was called Mahatma for the first time in 1914 in South Africa. Mahatma means ‘high souled’ and because of his ideologies he was termed Mahatma and now till now, he is known as Mahatma Gandhi worldwide. He led some of the most prominent movements during India’s Struggle for Independence. The first time he used the non-violent Civil disobedience movement was when he was in South Africa and he fought for Indian resident civil rights. After he returned to India and saw the poor condition of farmers, peasants, and laborers because excessive land tax and discrimination he started civil disobedience movements. He didn’t just stop there he fought for women’s rights, against poverty and untouchability, Caste discrimination but above all he fought for Swaraj that means the self rule.

In 1930 he led the famous Dandi Salt March against the British imposed salt taxes. Also in the year 1942, he led the Quit India Movement for the british to leave the country. He was imprisoned for many years in both south africa and India. His wife passed away while he was imprisoned in India. He led several movements that led to India’s Independence in the year 1947. He lived modestly and always used Satya (truth) and Ahimsa (Non-violence) as the only methods to protest and fight. He was assassinated on January 30, 1948. While he was taking a walk with his grandnieces he was shot from point blank range in his chest thrice by Nathuram Godse who was a hindu extremist and didn’t like how Gandhi thought about muslims even after so much carnage during the partition.
